Gibbs set to start against Slovenia after Baines’ training injury

first_img Kieran Gibbs in action for Arsenal Kieran Gibbs is set to start England’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia after Leighton Baines was injured in training.The Arsenal defender is the only other left-back in the squad, leaving him as the obvious choice to replace the Everton man.Roy Hodgson had to submit a 23-man squad to UEFA on Thursday and Manchester United star Luke Shaw was not included.The 19-year-old is not allowed to be added at this stage, despite Baines’ injury in training on Friday, and that leaves Gibbs in line to win his fifth cap against the European side.A Football Association spokesman said: “Leighton Baines has withdrawn from the England squad and will miss the games against Slovenia and Scotland.“The Everton defender picked up an injury in training on Friday morning and will return to his club for treatment.“No further call-ups will be made at this time.” 1last_img
