Highlands call on PNG Games Secretariat to extend deadline

first_imgWhile the accreditation forms were delivered a week later than schedule, with less than 90 days to go for the PNG Games in Kimbe later this year, the Secretariat has also raised serious concerns on funding and delay in venue preparations.During the executives meeting for the lead up to the Games at the Molka Lodge in Minj over the weekend, provincial sports coordinators said the venue preparations in Kimbe were behind schedule.Compounded with the fact that provinces are yet to receive sponsorships from their Provincial Governments and local MPs, the Secretariat said things looked bleak and expected delays in the whole program. The Highlands is the first to have an established secretariat outside of the PNG Sports Foundations. The executives are the Provincial Sports Coordinators who head the Provincial Game’s Teams Committee. They are Chairman, Chimbu’s Gabriel Brawa, Deputy Chairman, Southern Highland’s Vincent Pesnu, Secretary, Saki Holle EHP, Treasurer, James Kornam – Jiwaka, Enga’s Jonah McKay and Ken Angope from Hela.Brawa who visited the Games venue in Kimbe last week said whilst there seem to be some minor activities going on for the outdoor activities at the venues in Kulungi, Hoskins, Saraklok, Mosa, Kapore and the main San Remo Stadium now reaching final stages, the racing tracks reportedly ordered from India were yet to arrive. He said there was no indication on construction of facilities for indoor events like boxing, karate, taekwondo, dart, kick boxing, snooker, weightlifting, basketball, volleyball and powerliftingThey said if the government did fund the Provincial Governments and Districts as promised, the games would be held but if the funds did not come, there would be no games as most of the funding came from provincial coffers. They called on the MPs from the districts to help athletes as they came from the districts and it was not a responsibility for the Governors alone.Picture: Elite Highlands athlete Kupsy Bisamo in PNG colours going for gold in the middle distance run during the SP Games last year.last_img
