Hearst Corporation last week announced it bought an 80 percent stake in digital billing and payment services firm Kubra. The service, which manages billing and payments for the utility, insurance, financial services and healthcare industries, will be closely aligned with Hearst-owned CDS Global, a fulfillment and data processing company. Terms were not released, but it’s an interesting deal for Hearst to make. On the one hand, it fits with the revenue diversification theme the publishing market has been hungry for, but in this case it’s a service-based operation—not one dependent on advertising. It also puts Hearst in a position to make money from out-of-market industries like healthcare and utilities. In announcing the deal, Hearst Magazines president David Carey referred to it as “building new service businesses that have scale.” Third, it taps into the growing electronic payment and billing market, and that includes mobile. “As the consumer shift to electronic payment becomes more rapid, companies offering fully integrated billing and payment services are in high demand,” says Hearst Corp. president and CEO Steven Swartz in a statement. By matching up Kubra with CDS Global, Hearst can leverage the payment-oriented services the two companies provide. Kubra, like CDS, will remain an independent unit, with Kubra president and CEO Rick Watkin reporting to Carey. “Kubra’s experience in billing and payments is a great complement to the services CDS Global offers, and we have been working together in some capacity since 2011,” CDS Global president and CEO Debra Janssen tells FOLIO:. “While many of the day-to-day business and technology details will be more fully determined as KUBRA is integrated into the Hearst family, the great working relationship we have already built will allow us both to derive quick benefit from an expanded partnership.”
Ram Gopal Varma and P ChidambaramCollage of photos taken from Twitter and FacebookP Chidambaram’s followers trolled Ram Gopal Varma after the filmmaker made a comment on the arrest of the former union finance minister. The netizens said that the move was nothing but the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) vindictive politics.Chidambaram was arrested in connection with the INX Media case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from his Jor Bagh residence in New Delhi on Wednesday. The move comes after the Delhi High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. He moved the Supreme Court seeking interim protection and his plea will now be taken up on Thursday.Ram Gopal Varma, who often talks about current affairs on social media, took to Twitter on Thursday to talk about Chidambaram’s arrest. The controversial director opined that the arrest was the real demonstration of democracy and Narendra Modi has proved it again that none is above the law.Twelve hours after his arrest, Ram Gopal Varma tweeted: “Chidambaram Arrest is a true demonstration of democracy ..What can be a bigger irony, that he’s in custody at CBI headquarters which he himself inaugurated when he was Home Minister ..MODI’s INDIA is again and again proving that NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.”Many Twitter users responded to Ram Gopal Varma’s tweet. They said that the BJP is engaged in vindictive politics and using the ED and CBI to target opposition leaders. The leaders, who are willing to join the BJP, are washed off their sins and made free from legal actions. But if anyone declines to join the party, he is subjected to harassment. They also said that Chidambaram was not willing to join the BJP. Hence, he had to face arrest. The irony is that his name is not mentioned in the FIR, yet the CBI has taken him into the custody. It is a clear indication of the BJP’s vindictive politics, they said. That officer is suspended and two others are on administrative duty.Separately, seven other Baltimore officers on a gun crimes task force are accused of faking reports and false detentions.
Kolkata: Time and money may be vital things for everyone but things are different for a traffic constable of Kolkata Police. In a startling display of selflessness, Arup Mukherjee, traffic constable in the South Traffic Guard, has spent all his savings to set up a school for the children of the extremely backward ‘Sabar’ tribe in Purulia.Mukherjee started his efforts towards setting up the school at Puncha village in Purulia in 2010. He even obtained loans from various organisations for the same. In 2011, the school started its journey on November 13. They had a criminal instinct within them. If any incident such as theft or snatching was committed, my grandfather used to say the Sabars were behind it.”Mukherjee informed that his grandfather had once told him that the Sabars were that way due to lack of proper education and sufficient income for a decent livelihood. Since then, Mukherjee was determined that he would build a school and educate the Sabar children to give them better life. In 2011, the school started with 20 Sabar children, which has increased to 112students in 2018. At present, the school houses students up to Class IV with boarding facility.”Till date we have not received any government help. The school is running with contributions from some people. I myself contribute my entire salary every month for the school,” Mukherjee added. When asked how his family makes ends meet, Mukherjee replied with a smile: “My father retired as a sub-inspector from West Bengal Police. He happily spends his pension for us.” Mukherjee also informed that all of his family members feel proud of him despite all odds. After running the school for a few years, help arrived at the doorstep. Some students of the 1985 batch of Ramkrishna Mission Vidyapith, Purulia, heard about the school. Later, they contacted Mukherjee and since the last two years, a team of approximately 45 members have been constantly helping him run the school.Sanjay Tripathi, owner of a publication house in College Street, Kolkata, is one the members of the group. According to him, the school needs more help to survive in future.”We got information approximately two years ago. Then some of us went there to see exactly what was going on. Later, we decided that we must help the school. If some government help is offered, it would be very easy to secure the future of the Sabar children,” he said.Another person who still remains behind the curtain is Khirod Sashi Mukherjee, a resident of Puncha. Hearing Mukherjee’s desire, Khirod had donated approximately 12 cottahs of land to build the school and hostel.

According to reports, the Board had already put in force a mechanism to stop the supply and sale of firecrackers beyond permissible decibel sound limits (90 decibel) since the past couple of years.
