Learn how you can place your camera’s point of view on the tip of a pen (or anything) in After Effects with this video tutorial.Top image via Galymzhan Abdugalimov. As cameras have gotten smaller (without sacrificing quality), filmmakers have begun finding creative ways to use them that would have been impossible before. An example is the 5D Mk II on the barrel of a rifle in Act of Valor or a 7D on the edge of a shovel in Breaking Bad.Image via AMC.While cameras have become small enough to attach to tools, we may still be a few years out from seeing a camera that can actually film from the POV of a pen at broadcast quality. However, you can still pull off this trick in post-production with only a few simple steps. Before we jump into the tutorial, if you know that you’re going to apply this effect when you’re filming, you want to make sure you have a clear shot of the pen tip, and to make sure that it stays in focus so we can track it more easily in post-production. You also want to film at the highest resolution possible, as the shot will end up cropped after we apply the camera layer. Most importantly, make sure to frame the pen so it looks like the camera is on top of it to some extent. The MethodCreate a new composition with the footage, and find when the pen first touches the paper and when it stops touching it.If the tracker panel isn’t open, go to Window and select Tracker. Then hit Track Motion, and you’ll see the layer window.Set your track point at the nib or tip of the pen, and then hit analyze forward. The tracker may have a bit of trouble following the tip because when the ink hits the paper, the pen moves away — sometimes the tracker thinks that the black ink is the pen tip. If your tracking point loses focus, go back and manually adjust the tracking. When you have successfully tracked the movement, create a new null object, make sure that it’s the target, and hit apply. We are then going to add a new camera layer (the default setting is fine), and we’re going to parent the camera layer to the null object. To create the magic, we then turn our pen clip into a 3D layer by clicking this icon.We now have the camera following the tip of the pen as if it were attached to the pen itself. However, we also have a video clip that jumps around the composition and shows a lot of negative space. As I said, it is better to film in 4k if you can because we can simply change the composition to 1080p and crop out the negative space. If you don’t have the option of shooting in 4K, try to frame your shot with a bit of open space, so you can increase the scale of the clip without losing too much of the pen. There we go. A simple but very cool technique.
Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now Anthony Robbins has a framework for human needs. It’s very much like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, something a lot of people are familiar with, especially if you have taken a psychology class. Maslow’s needs are called deficiency needs, and Robbins are the same, even if he has made them more practical and tactical, something that makes them easy to understand and apply.Robbins’ Six Human Needs are certainty, variety, belongingness (love and connection), significance, growth, and contribution. Like Maslow, all human beings share these needs, each of us being driven more by some than others. Much like Maslow’s hierarchy starts at your physiological needs and moves up to safety, then to belongingness, before reaching needs of a higher order, the needs Robbins framework follows the same direction, with contribution being the top of the pyramid (for Maslow, it’s self-transcendence). Once your deficiency needs are met, contribution seems to be the greatest driver, and the one that provides the greatest sense of meaning, mission, and purpose. If you want the ultimate hack when it comes to creating a sense of meaning, and mission, and purpose in your life, you can shift right to contribution. At any time, you can contribute to some cause outside of yourself. You can find someone or some organization that needs your help, and you can give them your time and energy or your money (no matter how much or how little).I once heard a story about a senior executive at a big company. He decided to get his MBA in Philanthropy. I was unaware that a degree was necessary, having always believed that a check given to a worthy cause— that also clears the bank—makes one a philanthropist. Generosity isn’t something that is reserved to the wealthy and well-off. Giving what you are able to give, regardless of how much or how little, is generosity and compassion, neither of which should be measured or compared to what others give. You can approach the hierarchy of needs from the other direction. You can contribute to some cause beyond yourself. What you give makes a difference, just like each drop of water makes up the ocean, one drop being no more or no less than every other drop, none being more or less wet than any other.
The Lakers want Thomas to mentor their young players, and they’re giving him rest and recovery time when he needs — mindful that he wants to go into this summer as healthy as possible.“I think he’s been judged pretty harshly with the fact that he missed that much time,” Lakers coach Luke Walton said. “He’s playing good for us. I think with the more time he has just playing basketball, the better he’ll get as far as getting back to doing the things he was doing in Boston last season.”Walton speaks highly of Thomas, which suggests that the Lakers could be that one team Thomas is looking for.Games like Thursday certainly won’t hurt his cause. He came into the night averaging 14.3 points in 26 minutes on 37 percent shooting. Against the Heat, he shot 11 for 20, 6 for 11 from 3-point range.“If they give me a bigger opportunity, I’m capable of bringing more to the table,” Thomas said. “Until then I’m doing what I can. I’m getting as healthy as I possibly can. Every day I’m feeling a lot better. I’m just grinding it out and just trying to be ready for any opportunities that come my way.”ADVERTISEMENT Police teams find crossbows, bows in HK university PLAY LIST 01:29Police teams find crossbows, bows in HK university01:35Panelo suggests discounted SEA Games tickets for students02:49Robredo: True leaders perform well despite having ‘uninspiring’ boss02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games01:44Philippines marks anniversary of massacre with calls for justice01:19Fire erupts in Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City Thomas went through pain of the emotional and physical kind with the Celtics a year ago, after his sister died in a car crash just before the start of Boston’s postseason run. About three weeks later, on the day Chyna Thomas would have turned 23, her brother — a day removed from oral surgery — scored 53 points to lead the Celtics past Washington. Not long after that, the Celtics shut the 5-foot-9 guard down because of the right hip problem.“Him being a competitor and a warrior, he made his injury even worse instead of putting his stock up there and saying ’I’m done, let me get ready for the next season so I can get a max deal,’” said Miami guard Dwyane Wade, a Thomas teammate in Cleveland this season. “He kept trying to fight and fight and fight for the city that he was playing for. So it’s a tough situation.“One thing I know about him, you don’t become a household name at 5-foot-whatever-he-is without having grit, without having toughness and without knowing you can overcome anything.”That’s the belief Thomas still has these days.He doesn’t think he can merely return to the level he was at last year. He thinks he can get even better. The challenge will be making someone else believe that this summer.“It’s ‘what have you done for me lately.’ That’s the league we’re in and I understand that,” Thomas said. “But if I’m given the same opportunity I was given in Boston, I would do the same thing. And that’s just what it is. My resume speaks for itself. What I can do on the basketball floor speaks for itself. Amanda Missick ensures that the use and function of basic amenities such as water consumption along with fundamental government services throughout the TCI remains the main goal of her government. Strides have been made within Grand Turk to increase water supply per day. However, certain areas in the Ridge are still operating in limited quantities.Additionally, the minister noted that as a result of upgrading the plants’ technology, there would ultimately be an increase and continuous distribution of water throughout Grand Turk.Furthermore Minister Missick spoke about completed repair works to the Blue Hills Jetty as well as ongoing efforts to repair and redesign roadwork throughout the TCI some of which to be completed this year. Dan Cohen AUTHOR Washington, D.C. — An initiative to streamline DOD’s support agencies by cutting duplicative activities and reorganizing others led by House Armed Services Chairman Mac Thornberry (R-Texas) likely will take several years to complete, although it still is not clear what ultimately will be achieved through the effort, a panel of Washington-based experts said Wednesday at the 2018 Defense Communities National Summit. “I think it will be a big issue for some time,” said Todd Harrison, director of defense budget analysis at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “[But] I don’t think there’s a lot of agreement” as to the initiative’s precise goals, he said.Mackenzie Eaglen, resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, echoed Harrison’s comments: “This is not going to be a one-year effort … but the details are wildly up in the air.” After troop levels dropped following the height of the armed forces’ buildup in Iraq and Afghanistan, the fourth estate — civilian-dominated agencies that fall outside the military departments — was perceived as an overdue area for reform, she said. There’s also the question as to whether an internal review of defense agencies led by Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan and Chief Management Officer (CMO) John Gibson II will result in the kind of changes and level of savings Thornberry is looking for. If so, Congress may not seek to intervene further, Eaglen said.Thornberry’s initiative, part of the fiscal 2019 defense authorization bill passed by the House, calls for the CMO to reduce or eliminate duplicative cross-enterprise functions across all defense agencies and field activities related to civilian resource, services contracting, logistics and real estate management. The provision also directs the CMO to certify that the department has achieved at least 25 percent savings from those functions by Jan. 1, 2021. A separate section calls for the CMO to report to Congress on any recommendations to eliminate an agency or activity, or transfer some or all of its functions to another entity, following a review of the efficiency and effectiveness of defense agencies and field activities. Thornberry’s plan is subject to change, or possibly could be stripped out of the final version of the defense policy bill, as the Senate version does not contain similar language.“I think there are too many eyes on fourth estate for nothing to happen,” said Frederico Bartels, a policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation.
More From Roadshow 0 How to maintain your electric car 4:17 My recent video lambasting car engine head gaskets got a few of you electric car haters to remind me that EVs aren’t exactly maintenance-free. Fair enough. So this week, I give you my list of the top 5 things that need tending to underneath an electric car hood, or wherever it is they hide these parts. 2020 Kia Telluride review: Kia’s new SUV has big style and bigger value Roadshow Now playing: Watch this: Cooley On Cars 2020 BMW M340i review: A dash of M makes everything better 5. Tire rotation I put this at the bottom because it’s common to all cars (and you don’t do it anyway), but it’s extra important on an EV because they have a heavy footing with that big battery and exert a lot of torque on the driven wheels. Wouldn’t it be a shame if you were saving the environment with electric power only to be polluting it excessively by tossing out tires more often than you need to? 4. Brake fluid serviceEven though electric cars do most of their everyday stopping via regenerative braking, where the mechanical brakes aren’t used, they all have normal brake discs and pads. Those are pressed together via the same hydraulic fluid found in a conventional car, and that fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it likes to absorb water from the air and will corrode your brake system unless you flush it regularly. Tesla says 80 percent of the service its cars need can be done by a mobile service tech who arrives in a Tesla with a cool stripe. Tesla 3. Coolant service Battery electric cars have no engine but they still have coolant keep that big battery from doing what it naturally wants to do: catch fire. Coolant system-flush intervals vary widely, from every four years or 50,000 miles for a Tesla Model 3, to every 150,000 miles for a Chevy Bolt. 2. Brake service Separate from brake fluid are the brake pads and discs. How often an EV needs them serviced depends on how much you drive, how hard you drive, what regeneration settings you use and the terrain in your area. The best EV pilots read the traffic ahead and try never to use their brakes, and the lesser ones mash the brake pedal frequently and will be facing brake jobs. The unseen battery is where a huge amount of cost and residual value resides. Take care of that battery with a new set of habits you never needed on your old car. CNET 1. Battery care Your electric car’s battery, not its motor, is more analogous to a regular car’s engine in terms of cost and value. It’s the heaviest assembly, the most expensive and a big factor in the car’s future residual value. Take care of it like you would an engine by knowing that it can suffer when it’s sitting in overly hot or cold temps for too long, allowed to go totally dead, or charged too much or too often. The details of those parameters are in the owner’s manual and if you read nothing else of it, at least read that section. Dr Kamal HossainJatiya Oikya Front leader Kamal Hossain on Saturday warned that no one attempting to suppress democracy will be spared.Krishak Sramik Janata League chief Abdul Kader Siddiqui expressed confidence that none will be able to stop the victory of the initiative of Kamal Hossain to ensure free and fair elections in the country. At a discussion, Kamal Hossain called upon all to consolidate the national unity, reports UNB.”Repeated attempts had been made over the last 47 years to destroy democracy, but no one had been able to do it. I recall all that …No one had been able to destroy democracy and won’t be able to do it in the future, too,” he said.Kamal further said, “If anyone thinks we’re hapless people and they can rule us and exploit us as per their whim, they are wrong. The Banglaee nation proved it during the 1971 and also after 1975 that those who deceived them they had to pay a heavy price for such mistakes.”He also warned that no one can suppress the Bangalees who defeated the Pakistani occupation forces and forced them to surrender to them.Krishak Sramik Janata League (KSJL) organised the programme at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh to mark the jail killing day commemorating the assassinations of four national leaders inside Dhaka Central Jail on 3 November 1975.As per the constitution signed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Kamal said people are the owner of the country. “The owners have the right and some responsibilities as well. We can’t sacrifice the national interests to protect any party or individual’s interests.”Mentioning that the national will observe the 50th anniversary of its birth three years later, he called upon all to get united to complete the unfinished tasks of Bangabandhu and materialise the dreams of freedom fighters.Kamal Hossain hoped that KSJL president Abdul Kader Siddiqui will be there with Oikya Front with the goal of building the country as dreamt by freedom fighters.Speaking at the programme, Kader Siddiqui praised the leadership of Kamal and said the Oikya Front has already achieved its victory after forcing prime minister Sheikh Hasina to hold talks with its leaders.”Kamal Hossain is now the top most leader of the Oikya Front. I think he is also now unofficially the main leader of the entire nation.”He said it was true that Kamal Hossain could not win any polls barely 12 or three days back. “But now he can win the election from any seat of the country.”Kader Siddiqui also said Awami League will not even get 19 seats if any fair election is held in the country. He also said now the government is not in a good position as it was forced to sit with BNP leader in talks though they had been saying they smelled the odour of ‘burn bodies’ from them.Kader Siddiqui said Bikolpa Dhara President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury was supposed to join the programme, but he finally declined to be present as Kamal Hossain was made the chief guest.

ReutersLuxembourg is recalling its ambassador to Moscow for consultations in the latest show of solidarity from EU states to Britain over the poisoning of an ex-spy, the government said in a statement on Wednesday. The move comes just a day after the tiny but wealthy grand duchy said it would not follow the lead of 18 other EU states that have so far expelled Russian diplomats over the nerve agent attack in the English city of Salisbury.“In the context of the Salisbury attack, the government of Luxembourg stands in full solidarity with Britain, faced by this grave challenge to our common security,” said a foreign ministry statement.Noting that Luxembourg shared Britain’s assessment that it was highly likely Russia was responsible, it added that “Foreign and European affairs minister Jean Asselborn has decided to recall Luxembourg’s ambassador to Moscow for consultations”.Asselborn had been quoted by broadcaster RTL on Tuesday as saying that Luxembourg would not expel any Russian diplomats.“As far as Luxembourg is concerned, we have a very limited number of Russian diplomats here and, despite all our efforts, we have been unable to prove that any spy or person is working against Luxembourg’s interests,” he said at the time.Luxembourg is one of the EU’s smallest states but is disproportionately influential due to its status as one of the union’s founding countries and the site of several of its key institutions.Bulgaria, which currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency, has taken a similar step by saying it will recall its ambassador for consultations but not expel any Russian diplomats.Austria is one of the key states that has said it will not take any action, saying it wants to be a bridge between east and west.Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Slovenia, Slovakia and Portugal have also not taken any action so far.

APThe entrance to the San Jacinto River Waste Pits site is seen, Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, in Channelview, Texas. The Environmental Protection Agency says an unknown amount of a dangerous chemical linked to birth defects and cancer may have washed downriver from a Houston-area Superfund site during the flooding from Hurricane Harvey. EPA said Thursday night it has ordered the companies responsible for the San Jacinto River Waste Pits site to immediately address damage to a protective cap of fabric and rock intended to keep sediments highly contaminated with dioxins from spreading. (AP Photo/John L. Mone)The EPA says it has reached an agreement with two companies that will remove more than 200-thousand cubic yards of toxic waste from the San Jacinto River Waste Pits. The EPA says its agreement with the International Paper Company and McGinnes Industrial Maintenance will cost $115 million. In an emailed statement, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said the agreement marks the next step in his commitment to the people of Harris County to expedite the remediation of the San Jacinto Waste Pits site.“EPA will ensure that the remedial design removes all the contamination as quickly and safely as possible and permanently protects the health and safety of the surrounding communities and the San Jacinto River,” Pruitt said. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will help install engineering controls to keep the site safe before excavation begins. The waste from a paper mill was first pumped into the pits in the mid-1960s and is contaminated with dioxins. The chemical compounds are highly toxic and can cause cancer and reproductive and developmental problems. The remediation will take nearly 2 ½ years to complete. The companies responsible for the clean-up have previously opposed the plan. They say the cap on the pits is secure and attempts to remove the material could result in a harmful spill.Run-off from the San Jacinto River ends up in Galveston Bay. The Galveston Bay Foundation in a statement said it applauds the clean-up plan. Share
