Mother Outraged over 25yrs Jail for Daughter’s Killer

first_imgMrs. Oretha Tipayson, the woman whose 23 year-old  daughter, four months pregnant, was murdered by the deceased’s boyfriend, yesterday left the premises at the Temple of Justice, weeping. She broke into tears when Judge Roosevelt Willie sentenced Sylvester Tarpeh Davis to 25 years, contrary to her wish for the death penalty for her daughter’s killer. The sentence, she said, has created a scar of sorrow for her that will continue for many years to come, due to Judge Willie’s judgment. Convict Davies, 35, may likely not serve his entire 25-year sentence because he could benefit from  a presidential clemency, normally issued by the Liberian leader at the end of the year  to release long serving prisoners based on what she considers “good behavior.”Judge Willie declared that convict “Davis is sentenced to jail for 25 years.” But immediately after Judge Willie announced the sentence Mrs. Tipayson was heard shouting loudly, “I am surprised by the decision to send him to jail for 25years.” Though, she did not speak with journalists following yesterday’s verdict, she was also heard saying, “I really disagree strongly with the judge’s decision because it sends a huge message to the rest of the country that my daughter’s life was valueless.”“The judgment is a very difficult thing for me to accept. It is difficult to live without my daughter.” Davis was convicted of killing his 23 year-old fiancée, Sianneh, on November 30, 2014, in their Paity Town Community in Clara Town, Monrovia, after which he fled to Grand Cape Mount County where he was arrested on December 7 by officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP). After the murder he forced her remains into a blue barrel and dumped it in an unfinished room in the home of the deceased’s parents, where family members discovered it three days later. Many legal experts said Judge Willie’s decision could have been influenced by Davis’ remorse about the incident and his admission that he killed Sianneh.  However, the verdict makes no mention of the killing of Sianneh’s unborn child which would constitute a double murder.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
