Over 70 Women Participate in Global Mentoring Walk

first_imgMore than 70 Liberian women last Sunday participated in the Vital Voices Global Mentoring Walk launched as part of the International Women’s day celebration at Cooper’s Beach near ELWA hospital in Monrovia.The theme was: Make it happen,” intended to empower women by mentoring them.Speaking at the program, Dr. Nina Bowen, Team Leader, Democracy Rights and Governance, USAID/Liberia and US Embassy, urged the participants’ to focus on what they want to achieve in life.She described mentorship as a key factor because it helps one to find the right way in life.“If we walk alone, we walk faster but when we walk together you can go far and achieve that which you want,” Dr. Bowen said.The resident Chief Judge Eva Mappy Morgan, who is one of the mentors, said peer mentoring begins with the participants and they must be careful in choosing the kind of peers to achieve their goals.“If we must mentor you, you must follow your mind in whatever you have a passion to achieve in life,” Judge Mappy said.She urged women to work together and build self-esteem in achieving their goals.For her part Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah asserted that in order for Liberian women and girls to achieve their goals in life, they must focus on their dreams.“Everyone must have a dream of becoming what they want to become and your dreams must be clearly defined and have a time limit,” she said.According to Vital Voices Global Mentoring Walk flag bearer, Nancy Ijeoma Obi, the launch of the program is to bring positive impact into the lives of women and girls women by assigning mentors in various fields like nursing, engineering, geologists, judges etc, to guide them on to achieve their life time goals.She also disclosed that the project will last for six months during which there are plans to take the program to other parts of Liberia.Cecilia Davis, Secretary General of Society for Women Engineers of Liberia (SWEL), said the program has enlightened the participants on how to go about achieving their goals by having passion and gaining self esteem.She said her organization also mentors women and girls to impact society, adding “We want our women and young people to work with passion.  Some complain of being maltreated by their spouses because they are now taking bold steps to become what they want to be.”Meanwhile, the Global Mentoring Walk has set up women leaders and emerging women leaders’ groups to walk together in their communities to mentor others.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
