Ming’s dominance continues in Monterrey

first_imgOVERSEAS-based Guyanese,Calvin Ming showcased a brilliant display of race-craft to pick up back-to-back podium spots when the formula 4 NACAM Championship rolled into Monterrey, Mexico.Ming and his teammate Manuel Sulaiman were both quick in the practice sessions on Friday and Saturday morning, with Calvin setting the fastest times. However, on the last lap of Saturday’s practice session, Ming’s car developed an electrical problem causing the engine to shut down.He was unable to drive in the qualifying session, since the technicians had to replace the entire wire loom and some solenoids which took several hours, and was only completed just before the start of race #1.Speaking exclusively to Chronicle Sport, Ming said, “All in all, it was a good weekend. We showed we had the pace and we were able to pick up podium spots which is always what we are looking for. Big thanks to the RAM racing team.”Starting at the back of the pack due to not qualifying,he proceeded to charge through the field and by about midway through the 21st lap he took over the lead.He ultimately finished seven seconds ahead of his teammate Manuel around the 3.2 km ‘Autodromo de Monterrey’ circuit in the 30-minute affair. He returned to be the quickest on Sunday morning before the 50% inverted grid meant that he had to start fifth by virtue of finishing the earlier race in first.Ming carried Saturday’s momentum into Sunday by getting off to a good start and moving up to P2 by the end of the first lap. He encountered some difficulty with gear changing, but managed to hold on to finish the race in P2.Race-three was determined by the second fastest qualifying time and having not qualified, Ming again had to start at the back of the pack.Immediately after the race started the gear selection issue became a major problem causing him to return to the paddock at the end of lap #2.However, it could not be rectified, so the technician manually put it into fifth gear and sent him back out so that he could complete the race and pick up valuable points toward his championship, which he lead heading into the round.Ming returns to Miami tomorrow, before heading out on Wednesday to Indianapolis for the next round of the USF2000 series.last_img read more
