The former abandoned existing building located in Ovar, although in an advanced state of disrepair, revealed a high consolidation perspective, that came from the maintenance of its simple existing structure, such as it was. Structurally the building was not in bad condition, having only the necessity of repair and replace some wooden elements of the roof structure.Save this picture!© ITS – Ivo Tavares StudioThe wide use of wood in this type of ancient construction goes from the partitions ceilings and walls, to the floors, interior and exterior openings, paneling, doors, roof, and remaining structure floor levels: ground-floor and floor. It was needed a careful work approach, that allowed the protection of those elements, including its recovery and some replacements.Save this picture!SectionThe proposal combines the recover necessity of all the existing elements, introducing a three bedroom typology program, with the programmatic and typologic necessary adaptations. The house is mostly developed in its middle floor, maintaining the visual comfort characteristics, material and salubrity, gathering in this floor its main habitable compartments. On the lower level is the designated service space area, proposed location of spaces such has the laundry, the support small kitchen, storeroom and toilet, all fully concentrated along the north side of the building, freeing the remaining area for installation of workspace/office and multipurpose room.Save this picture!© ITS – Ivo Tavares StudioAs for the top floor, the changes are only at a construction level, with the revision of coverage, gutters and roofs, and introducing some new enhancements, like the 5 new skylights that improve natural lighting and ventilation, and also the thermal insulation and wood paneling coating of the attic, allowing a more homogeneous and recreational use of space.Save this picture!© ITS – Ivo Tavares StudioThe intermediate floor, already conditioned by the previously constructed matrix, suffered an additional function effort to place all its different areas – including rooms, living room and kitchen – in existing compartments, meaning that the new bathroom location moves to the old kitchen area. A new vertical circulation area appears uniting the 3 different floors, and in an area earlier occupied by the old access ladder and storage area.Save this picture!Floor PlanAll the intervention had a high need to safeguard and recovery all the possible existing elements, either on a structural level or at the maintenance of the functional formal and material matrix. A special care effort, building and applying all the infrastructure installation, was made, maintaining the original building characteristics, making it independent from all lighting, plumbing and HVAC facilities.Save this picture!© ITS – Ivo Tavares StudioAs for the new support created areas, the used material was the wooden structure with the lightweight, easy to assemble and essentially reversible, OSB panels or VIROC, not introducing any structural changes in the building. Regarding the other new support created areas, such as infrastructure, new cabinets, toilets, kitchen, vertical circulation, and others; they were all executed in lacquered or varnished wood, in a sort of contemporary and neutral language.Save this picture!Floor PlanThe new intervention does not conceal or hide itself, but having the sense for permanent coexistence, it seeks an adjustment to new silent spaces, revalidating them and looking for the lowest visual noise.Save this picture!© ITS – Ivo Tavares StudioProject gallerySee allShow lessRIBA ARHITEKTI Creates Ceramic Mosaic for ETI ShowroomArchitecture NewsAustralian Institute of Architects Announce 2014 National AwardsArchitecture News Share “COPY” Year:  Save this picture!© ITS – Ivo Tavares Studio+ 46 Share House in Ovar / Nelson ResendeSave this projectSaveHouse in Ovar / Nelson Resende Projects ArchDaily ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOr Clipboard CopyAbout this officeNelson ResendeOfficeFollowProductsWoodBrick#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesRefurbishmentRenovationOvarPortugalPublished on November 07, 2014Cite: “House in Ovar / Nelson Resende” 07 Nov 2014. Bolivia tense as right wing aims for coup

first_imgBolivian President Evo Morales meets with miners from Potosi, Nov. 2. (Photo: TeleSUR English)Published by on Nov. 2. Translation by John Catalinotto. The town hall meeting held by the Bolivian opposition in La Paz on Oct. 31 was well attended. It was the expression of a new correlation of forces where, for the first time since Evo Morales began his presidency in 2006, opposition sectors managed to summon a mobilization of this magnitude in the center of the country’s political power. The phenomenon is characterized as a “moment of emerging struggles” by Álvaro Zárate, an anthropologist and member of Columna Sur, a youth organization within the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS), the ruling party.“There are several sectors that are joining together, under the themes of regional demands, racism, business demands, from universities, doctors or environmental groups,” he explained. The meeting in the La Paz town hall, as well as the mobilizations that the opposition has been carrying out day after day, are heterogeneous spaces with different demands and speeches that range from a rejection of Cuba and Venezuela to the need to protect the environment. The complexity of the [right-wing] mobilization has, however, agreed on an objective that has been heightened from the day after the Oct. 20 elections until now: no longer asking for a second round but for the annulment of the elections and the resignation of Evo Morales. But who decided there should no longer be a second round, but [rather] elections without Morales and Carlos Mesa [the former Bolivian president who was runner-up in the Oct. 20 presidential election]? The opposition’s leadershipWho leads the mobilized opposition to Morales? Zárate names several people who lead from the shadows, such as “Carlos Sánchez Berzain, the former government minister of Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada, who is leading from Washington NGOs, and Branko Marinkovic, the president of the first Santa Cruz Civic Committee of 2008.”Other figures have emerged, the main one being Fernando Camacho, who “with a group of businessmen lead the Civic Committee of Santa Cruz and lead this attempted coup d’état.”That two people have been killed and several wounded increases the tension in this postelection conflict in Bolivia. The [current] scenario leaves traditional political parties aside, a phenomenon that has been going on for several years. Zárate situated the decline of the parties after the referendum vote of Feb. 21, 2016, held to find out if Evo Morales could run again for president [which Morales won].Zárate explained: “The parties lost legitimacy; the only formula for defeating President Morales was to unite behind a nonparty banner. In the case of Comunidad Ciudadana, it was a short-term alliance; they had to put up a candidate, who turned out to be Mesa.“The figure of Mesa, or the mayor of La Paz, as well as the October election, has already passed to second place in importance,” Zárate continued. “The real enemies are the [right-wing] radicals who do not come representing a political party and instead seek to carry out a coup d’état. Mesa did not attend the town hall meeting; he was booed several times, and he announced that on Sunday [Nov. 3] he will hold an ‘extraordinary assembly of the Citizen Community.’” Along with that [attempt] comes a new phenomenon: Camacho, the main emerging figure, gained strength not only in Santa Cruz but also in La Paz and Andean areas. “Never had the Andean sectors accepted leadership from the east,” analyzed Columna Sur. [The eastern region is the center of political reaction.]How to respond?“The behavior of Evo Morales has been nonconfrontational, that is what he has told us, and we will always bet on peace and democracy,” emphasized Zárate. This has meant MAS mobilizes to maintain a presence in the street without confrontation, in a scenario where, as the Bolivian government has condemned, the right seeks to generate violence, wound and kill.Along with that, the [right-wing] gamble is on a binding audit in which 30 specialists from the Organization of American States participate. “If at any time the OAS recommends that we go for a second round, President Morales is willing; he is going to give everything possible to defuse this violence that comes from only one side, from a sector that wants to ignore the election,” explained Zárate. What will the mobilized opposition say if the audit validates the results of Oct. 20 and indicates that Morales won in the first round? And if, on the other hand, the audit indicates that a second round is necessary, will they then not participate? Have they reached the point of no return? It is a complex scenario, where, within the diversity of those who are mobilized [on the right], there is a leadership that has made the decision to carry out a coup d’état. Consultants unravel coronavirus implications for Dutch schemes

first_imgIt said the return on emerging market equities was -3.4% in January, to which the firm alsp blames the virus for.As interest rates dropped considerably, the 30-year swap rate – Dutch schemes’ main standard for discounting liabilities – fell by 29bps to 0.34%, both firms said.As a consequence, pension funds’ liabilities rose by approximately 5% under the official discount rate, which is boosted by the application of an ultimate forward rate (UFR), according to Mercer. Were the pure market rate to be used, liabilities had risen even higher, by 6%, it added.Aon warned that Dutch pension funds remain vulnerable because of the sector’s widely shared expectation of lower returns in the coming years. It said that investment results ranging from 3-4%, including volatility, threatens to limit pension funds’ recovery potential.Although social affairs’ minister Wouter Koolmees has granted a temporary reprieve last November from the minimum funding requirements, the minimum required coverage ratio will be back from 90% to the official level of 104.3% at year-end.‘Stay calm’Aaron Costello, regional head for Asia, at Cambridge Associates, said: “Investors should stay calm.” While the Wuhan coronavirus is still spreading, the virus remains less deadly and more contained than the SARS outbreak of 2002–03.“Looking at other epidemics, history suggests that after an initial sharp hit, economies and markets typically recover quickly,” he added. He said the economic and human impact of the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak is still increasing, and markets may decline further in the coming weeks. However, investors should not overreact. “Indeed, further downside in Asian and Chinese equities may provide a compelling buying opportunity once the fear subsides,” he said.StyleAnalytics, a factor analysis expert company, said the biggest economic risk at this point is fear of a Chinese market collapse and a drop in Chinese productivity/supply chain to the rest of the world. It agrees that investors “shouldn’t worry much about factor tilts if the virus remains contained to China”.But it suggests that if the contagion results in a fear-scenario, investors might want to tilt towards low-volatility and away from small-cap equity. It said: ”Since the biggest impact of this virus will almost certainly be to the Chinese economy, the protection that low-vol and yield provided during the last [2015] Chinese equity crisis suggests a defensive strategy for factor investors as the world watches this latest crises unfold.” The negative economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak in China last month has slightly affected the funding positions of Dutch pension funds, undoing the improvement achieved in December, Aon said.Aon, as well as Mercer, said Dutch schemes’ coverage ratio dropped to 101% on average in January. This is a decrease of two percentage points according to Aon, and three percentage points according to Mercer. Both consultants use slightly different calculation methods.Aon said the coverage ratio had increased in December to 103%. According to both firms, the average policy funding ratio at the end of January for Dutch pension funds was 102%.Due to global fears of the coronavirus, equity returns declined and there was a flight to safe investments, which lowered interest rates, Aon explained.last_img read more

Lorraine L. Foster

first_imgThe family of Lorraine L. Foster are mourning the loss of their very beloved mother and grandmother who was called from this life on March 20, 2016 at the age of 87.  She was comforted and surrounded by her family at Arbor Grove Village of Greensburg, Indiana, as she passed away from this life into the next. She was born December 27, 1928 in Batesville, Indiana to the late Albert and Emma Lampe Goldsmith.     Lorraine married Stanley Edward Foster on June 21, 1947. They began their life together first living at the Old Central House in Napoleon, Indiana, but shortly thereafter, Stanley along with his brothers built their home in Napoleon where they lived the rest of their lives together, raising their eleven children. Stanley preceded her in death on July 12, 1993.      A devout Catholic, she loved her church, St. Maurice of Napoleon.  She loved music and was blessed with a beautiful voice! For approximately fifty five years, she served as a cantor singing songs of praises to the Lord.  She also sang at weddings and funerals. Her family stated that she loved to hear Willie Nelson and Elvis Presley sing. She could do a good rendition of “I’m All Shook Up”!      Asked what her occupation was, she would answer, “Raising my children.” Her family and grandchildren had been her life!  She will be so sadly missed. SURVIVORS:    Sons:  (7) Dennis (Janice) Foster of Nogales, AZ ; Timothy (Janet) Foster of Batesville, IN; James (Cheryl) Foster of Batesville; Doug (Pam) Foster of Greensburg, IN; Terry “Mick” Foster of Greensburg; John Paul (Lynnis) Foster of Osgood; Larry Mark (Phyllis) Foster of Greensburg. Daughters:  (4)  Diane Huening of Greensburg; Rita Foster of Greensburg;Peggy (Duane Sizemore) Murray of Osgood; Laurie Foster of NapoleonGrandchildren: 23; Great Grandchildren: 47; Great Great Grandchildren: 5She was preceded in death by six brothers (Ralph, Albert, Bob, Clifford, Paul and Earl Goldsmith) and four sisters (Dorothy Oswald, Mildred Scheney, Rita Maple and Katie Fichtner).SERVICES:Visitation: Tuesday, March 22, 2016/ Neal’s Funeral Home/ 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.Funeral: Wednesday, March 23, 2016/ St. Maurice Catholic Church of Napoleon, IN/ 10:00 a.m.Burial:  Church Cemetery, Napoleon; Memorials: Donor’s ChoiceArrangements by Neal’s Funeral Home          www.nealsfuneralhome.netlast_img read more

Police Explorers

first_imgRe “Police Explorer ties to Scouts assailed” (Nov. 21): Amazing. There was a time when the LAPD competed with other departments to recruit applicant/Explorers who were Boy Scouts. The affiliation was synonymous with the core values sought in every officer, but in 2007 the mere mention of any association with them is considered “disturbing” by a member of the Police Commission. I will remember what the commissioner said the next time I read about the lowering of LAPD officer recruitment standards due to a shortage of qualified applicants applying for a job with the LAPD. We get what we seek. – R.M. Elias AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREPettersson scores another winner, Canucks beat KingsGranada Hills Scouting Re “Police Explorer ties to Scouts assailed” (Nov. 21): As a former Scout and father of an Eagle Scout, I was amazed at LAPD Cmdr. Kirk Albanese’s statement that Explorers ” … do not get exposed to anything that the Boy Scouts of America teach.” Does he fear that future police officers may become trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent? I’m sure most of the department’s current officers do not share his disdain for virtuous leadership training. What kind of city do we live in when a top leader of our police department derides the greatest youth organization in America? – Richard Nonn Northridge Stepping up Re “Running deep in the red” (Nov. 15): I read that the California budget will soon be $10 billion in debt. Here’s my question: Which of the state politicians below will be the first to take a pay cut until the budget is balanced? Mike Feuer, Jack Scott, George Runner, Tom McClintock, Alex Padilla, Sheila Kuehl, Gilbert Cidella, Sharon Runner, Audra Strickland, Cameron Smyth, Lloyd Lavine, Julia Brownley, Paul Krekorian and Anthony Portantino, are you listening? Stand up and be counted! – R.J. Johnson North Hollywood Nothing new Re “Developer bills go to taxpayers” (Nov. 19): So what else is new – scamming the taxpayer is the politicians’ way of life. They cry the blues at election time and everyone falls for it. People go to jail for committing robberies; not them – they get a raise. If they are not intelligent enough to know if they are charging enough for permits, they should not be there. How much longer can we afford to support these people who won’t work for the people who pay their wages? – Joe Pinoy Lozano Mission Hills Going nuclear The GOP presidential candidates are falling all over themselves claiming that their administrations will not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons. Very macho. Short of invasion and occupation, how do they plan to stop any nation from using the technology that’s been available for 50 years? If we could deter any nation from this course of action, why didn’t we stop Pakistan? Or India … or China? Or North Korea (who we’re paying to not again test theirs)? In the next presidential administration, four new nations will go nuclear. And most will do so to prevent pre-emptive attacks by the U.S. – Stan Gordon Encino Spinning Regarding Bill O’Reilly’s column against the movie “Redacted,” it must be noted that O’Reilly’s revulsion does not extend to the money the movie generates. Commercials for the movie appeared on Fox during the O’Reilly show. So Bill, you’re saying don’t spend the money to see the movie; that’s unethical. But, it’s OK to take their money and air commercials to make people want to see the abhorrent movie. Reid set to miss Chelsea game

first_imgWest Ham defender Winston Reid has been ruled out of Saturday’s match with Chelsea. The New Zealand defender came off in the 2-2 draw at Sunderland three weeks ago but had expected to be fit after the international break. However, the 27-year-old missed last weekend’s win at Crystal Palace and has not fully recovered.Winger Victor Moses is ineligible to play against his parent club, but Hammers boss Slaven Bilic says they have an otherwise clean bill of health, bar long-term absentees, with strikers Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia regaining fitness.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Brentford v Newcastle: five key battles

first_imgEmbed from Getty ImagesBrentford host Newcastle on Saturday hoping to avenge the 3-1 defeat they suffered at St. James’ Park in October and earn a first win over the Magpies since 1948. Here are five match-ups we think could go a long way to determining who comes out on top.Scott Hogan v Jamaal LascellesCome 2pm, we’ll know just how close – or otherwise – Hogan is to a potential move to West Ham. Bees boss Dean Smith says the 14-goal striker has recovered from the injury that kept him out of last weekend’s FA Cup tie and insists he is available for selection, so if he does not join Vibe on the teamsheet his career at Griffin Park may be at an end. Newcastle’s back four – led by skipper Lascelles and ex-Aston Villa man Clark – have conceded only 20 goals in 25 games, the third-best record in the league.Harlee Dean v Dwight GayleEmbed from Getty ImagesAt the other end, Bees skipper Dean will have the unenviable task of shackling the Championship’s top goalscorer. Gayle has 19 to his name this season, including two in the reverse fixture at St. James’ Park back in October. Dean has called on his Brentford team-mates to impose themselves on the game and get in Newcastle’s faces – he, John Egan and Andreas Bjelland will have to be at their sharpest to prevent ex-Palace man Gayle from notching again.Tom Field or Yoann Barbet v Matt RitchieEmbed from Getty ImagesNineteen-year-old Field scored his first two Brentford goals against Eastleigh in the FA Cup last weekend, which may see him keep his place. However, Newcastle pose a considerably greater threat than Martin Allen’s National League side, and with Bjelland set to return to the back three, Smith may prefer to go with the more experienced Barbet against Ritchie, one of the most talented wingers in the division.Ryan Woods and Nico Yennaris v Isaac Hayden and Jack ColbackEmbed from Getty ImagesGetting control of the midfield will be crucial. Newcastle are without Jonjo Shelvey, who is serving the final game of a five-match ban, so will rely on the more workmanlike Hayden and Colback to provide a platform for their dangerous front four. Yennaris and Woods, who are likely to be joined in the middle by either Romaine Sawyers or Josh McEachran, will hope to win this particular battle and set the tempo themselves.Maxime Colin v Paul DummettEmbed from Getty ImagesColin has been increasingly influential since Brentford switched to 3-5-2, with his ability to get up and down the right flank. His opponent on Saturday, homegrown left-back Dummett, has already played as many Championship games this term as he did in the Premier League last season and is growing in stature, despite criticism from some Newcastle fans at times.   Ads by Revcontent Trending Articles Urologists: Men, Forget the Blue Pill! We reported that Google was planning this feature last August and the first version to support bookmark syncing was released in early November. For the time being, however, this is just an extension and not a core feature of Firefox. Google just released a new stable version of Chrome for Windows PCs that includes two of the most frequently requested features: extensions and bookmark sync. This change won’t affect those users who are already using these features through Chrome’s beta or developer preview channel. Windows users who are using the stable version of Chrome, however, will finally be able to use extensions and sync bookmarks between multiple machines. Google also just updated its own Google Voice extension for Chrome. Yahoo! Launches Android Apps, Plus Web Apps for iPhone

first_imgThe Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology sarah perez Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement In what can only be touted as “better late than never” news, Internet giant Yahoo! is today, at long last, launching its first ever applications designed for Android-based smartphones. There are now a trio of new apps available in the Android Market: a Yahoo! Mail app, Yahoo! Messenger app and a Yahoo! Search widget. Each of these applications have been built “from the ground up” for the Android platform, a company blog post proclaims, and they work on any Android phone running OS version 2.0 or higher. Alongside the launch of these new Android apps, the company is also announcing the arrival of revamped Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! News mobile Web apps, designed with iPhone and iPhone Touch users in mind. Yahoo’s Android AppsYahoo! says that the new Android applications have been optimized for three particular Android phones: the Motorola Droid, HTC Incredible and the Google Nexus One, however they will run on any Android device with OS 2.0 or higher. The Mail application functions as a standalone inbox for Yahoo Mail users, and features several integrations with the device’s software itself, including the ability to send emails from the native address book, upload photos as attachments directly from the camera or photo gallery and support for push notifications of new email messages. It also includes attachment viewing capabilities, emoticons, search by sender, recipient, subject and keywords, folder management and spam tools and multi-tasking support. Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Tags:#Apple#Google#mobile#news#Product Reviews#web Related Posts The app is available in 8 languages across more than 200 countries but is an opt-in experience only while in beta testing. To sign up, visit from your iPhone or iPod Touch’s Web browser. The Yahoo! News Web app has also been redesigned with a new layout, animated visual effects and touch-based navigation capabilities. You can learn more about all the launches here on YouTube. What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … iPhone “Web Apps”The other new applications arriving today are not native iPhone applications, but rather Web apps supporting the latest standards-based technology, HTML 5. Yahoo! claims that its new Mail for the mobile Web is the “most advanced mobile web-app” it has ever created, as it makes use of new HTML 5 features like client-side databases and advanced caching capabilities which helps it provide offline access. This makes it seem more like a native application than mobile Web site to end users. The app also supports full search, message and attachment previews as well as attachment viewing. The new Messenger app, as you may expect, connects you to friends for real-time instant messaging. It, too, runs in the background and alerts you to new messages using push notifications. In select countries, the app will also allow you to send text messages to friends which appear as a part of your IM conversation. (SMS supported in Canada, Indonesia, India, Kuwait, Malaysia, Philippines, Pakistan, Thailand, United States and Vietnam). The Android search widget is only available in the U.S. for now with localized versions launching at a later date. It sits on your Android’s home screen allowing you to either type in or speak your search query. It offers auto-suggest capabilities and brief summaries for breaking news information (for example, a “World Cup” query presents current scores) as well as links to other news, articles and Web pages. last_img read more

The amended Defamation Act 2013, which seeks to replace the decades-old slander and libel laws, was passed in the House of Representatives on November 5 with bi-partisan support.According to Attorney General, Hon. Patrick Atkinson, who led the debate, a key feature of the Bill is the abolition of the distinction between libel and slander and the establishment of a single cause of action to be known as defamation. It also seeks to abolish the law related to criminal libel and to institute a legal limit of two years within which a lawsuit for defamation can be filed instead of the previous six years.Additionally, the Bill introduces provision for the media not being liable, if it innocently disseminates information from a reputable source, and also replaces the defence of justification with the defence of truth. It also provides provisions for the resolution of disputes without court proceedings, as well as modification for the defence of fair comment. In giving support to the Act, Opposition Spokesperson on National Security and Justice, Delroy Chuck said “there is very little disagreement with the provisions of the Bill”.He noted that the Opposition is in “full support” of the Bill, as it seeks  to remove a historical legacy of criminal libel, where persons could have been charged for making “outrageous” comments.“It has also made it very clear that once a publication is truthful and fair or if it is qualified in certain circumstances that you (the media) have freedom of expression,” he said.Jamaica previously operated with a Libel and Slander Act, which was passed in 1851, and the Defamation Act, which was passed in 1961.The legislation was passed in the Upper House in July.
